Joining Cub Scouts
Why Join Cub Scouting, how does it work?
Please start with the BSA's Cub Scout Parent Information Guide, a concise summary of the Cub Scout program, which answers these key questions and more.
What is Pack 157?
Pack 157 serves 1st - 5th grade boys in Weston, MA; though we occasionally have a boy or two from nearby towns. If your boy has mild special needs, then you should explore Pack 222, which also meets in Weston.
Pack 157 is chartered by St. Julia's parish on Boston Post Road, which generously provides outstanding meeting facilities. Note that boys of all faiths are welcome in Pack 157.
Pack 157 is served by the "Viking District" of the Knox Trail Council. The Viking district covers Newton, Wellesley and Weston. Knox Trail Council manages Nobscot Scout Reservation and runs summer camp at Camp Resolute. They also provide leader training, organize a fund-raiser, and organize large activities such as the Viking District Pinewood Derby, overnight at the Museum of Science, overnight at the Pawtucket Red Sox etc.
How does Pack 157 Work?
Pack 157 is organized by parents, who follow the structure and guidelines summarized in the parent information guide above. This means that your son will be in a Tiger Den (1st grade), Wolf Den(2nd grade), Bear Den(3rd grade), 4th Grade Webelos Patrol, or a 5th Grade Webelos Patrol. The Dens and patrols set their own meeting times and meeting places according to the needs of their members. The Dens follow the program in their respective handbooks to complete the rank advancement by the end of the school year.
All of Pack 157's Dens get together in a Pack Meeting on one Tuesday per month. Pack Meetings are usually 6:30-7:45PM at St. Julia's parish hall, though sometimes at the Weston Scout House or the Weston Community Center. See the Pack 157 event summary for a list of upcoming Pack events. See the Pack's Google calendarfor details, as well as additional Council and Den activities.
All family members are welcome to accompany Cub Scouts to Pack Meetings. Parents are responsible for their children's behavior, and no children may leave the meeting room unsupervised.
Finally, there are opportunities for Dens to join together for multi-Den activities for boys of like ages. In the past we've done this for Den over-nights, such as a Scout House overnight for 1st and 2nd graders, or a campout with the Boy Scouts for Webelos.
